About Osram
Osram is one of the most established names in lighting. The brand was registered in Germany in 1906, taking its name from osmium and wolfram, the two metals used in early lamp filaments, and the company was formed in 1919 when the lamp businesses of Auergesellschaft, Siemens & Halske and AEG combined. Over the following century Osram introduced milestones that are still standard today, including the first fluorescent lamp in 1936 and electronic ballasts from 1985.
Today the picture is split, and it is worth knowing which Osram you are buying. In 2016 Osram spun off its general lighting lamp business as LEDVANCE, which is now the exclusive licensee of the Osram brand for general lighting lamps. The remaining business, ams OSRAM, focuses on automotive, specialty and opto-semiconductor lighting. In practice that means an Osram-branded LED bulb you buy today is made by LEDVANCE under licence, while Osram-branded control gear and specialty lamps come through the wider Osram ecosystem. Both are genuine Osram-branded product.
