About Helvar
Helvar is a Finnish lighting company specialising in intelligent lighting control and lighting components. It supplies electronic and magnetic ballasts, LED drivers and lighting control systems, and like Tridonic its products sit inside luminaires and control circuits rather than on a shelf, which is why the name is familiar to electricians and specifiers.
What we stock from Helvar
We currently hold four Helvar ballasts: EL series electronic ballasts for T5 and compact fluorescent lamps, including the EL 1-2x18-42W TCs and the EL 2x32-42W TCs, a 1x14-35W T5 electronic ballast, and the NK35 LU magnetic ballast for 35W high pressure sodium lamps. These are control gear, not lights, and should be installed by a qualified electrician. Yes. Our Helvar stock is sourced through authorised channels, and Lighting Souq is certified under Qatar's Theqa program, the Ministry-backed authentication mark that verifies a business is registered and compliant with Qatari e-commerce regulation.
A magnetic ballast uses a coil and is the older technology: heavier, less efficient, and it can cause visible flicker. An electronic ballast uses circuitry, runs cooler and quieter, is more efficient and starts the lamp without flicker. They are not interchangeable without checking the fitting, so match the ballast type to what the luminaire is designed for.
The NK35 LU is a magnetic ballast for 35W high pressure sodium lamps, the orange-toned lamps used in street and area lighting. It will not run fluorescent or LED. If you are replacing sodium gear, tell our team the lamp wattage and we will confirm the match.
A qualified electrician. Ballasts wire into the mains circuit, and damage caused by improper installation, or installation not carried out by a qualified electrician, is not covered.
